The Tour d'Oisans has been described as "....one of the most strenuous alpine walks....The landscape is stupendous. There are wondrous views and nowhere along the whole route lacks interest. The valleys are rich in individuality, the hamlets varied in style and facility. Forest, meadows, bare mountainside, scree, scant tracks, stones, bushes, rocks, streams, pools, rivers, lakes, glaciers are the ingredients, and very little roadwork is encountered." (Andrew Harper). This magnificent 10 day tour is a complete circuit of the Parc National des Ecrins starting and finishing at Bourg d'Oisans, accessible from Grenoble or Lyon airports.

There are some challenging ascents on this tour culminating with the 1140m climb from Valsenestre to the Col de la Muzelle on day 9. The scenery is always breathtaking however, and of course every ascent is always followed by an exhilarating descent. Between these ups and downs there is some truly beautiful running through the valleys and alpine pastures of this, one of the most unspoilt regions of the Alps.

Gite D'Etape and mountain ‘refuges' owned by the Club Alpin Francais provide the accommodation and meals throughout the tour. These are often located in traditional alpine villages, and in the case of the latter usually spectacularly positioned with fine views of the surrounding peaks and valleys.
